Women's Cross Country - Fri, Sep. 1, 2017

CLINTON, Miss. – In a field filled with some of the top running college teams in the south and a muddy terrain from the rains of Hurricane Harvey, the Blue Mountain College Women's Cross Country team managed to grab 3rd place out of 13 teams in the first race of the season today at the Mississippi College Season Opener 4K.

The Lady Toppers saw two runners step to the podium when it was all said and done, with Martha Chunn (SO/Blue Springs, Miss.) claiming the 12th place spot in the race at 15:56 and Elle Hamilton (SO/Shannon, Miss.) taking the 15th spot at 16:12.

Catherine Snyder (SR/New Albany, Miss.) finished her day in 16th at 16:14, Alexis Pace (SO/Caledonia, Miss.) ended in 26th at 16:56, Leah Johnson placed 35th at 17:23 and Cayce Smith (FR/Guntown, Miss.) rounded out the team's race in 64th at 20:03.

The 3rd place finish was good enough to take out the likes of Delta State University, Millsaps College, Alcorn State University and Jackson State University.

The University of Southern Mississippi squad would take home the 1st place title, followed by Mississippi College in 2nd.

"We showed really great heart today," BMC head coach Phillip Laney.  "Running conditions weren't the best today, but that was for everyone out there.  There's still work to do, but overall, we made a good showing against some bigger colleges."

Blue Mountain returns to the trails Sept. 9 at the Freed Speed Open in Henderson, Tenn. at Freed-Hardeman University.
