A member of the Arizona Coaches Hall of Fame, Coach Jerry Conner begins his third season as Head Men’s Basketball Coach for the Blue Mountain College Toppers, a program that came into existence with the 2007-2008 season.
Coach Conner came to Blue Mountain from Phoenix, Ariz., where he was the head boy’s basketball coach at Shadow Mountain High School for 32 years.
At Shadow Mountain Coach Conner enjoyed considerable success. His teams captured two state championships, he was selected state Coach of the Year three times, accumulated more than 500 career victories, was inducted into the state coaches hall of fame, and was honored by having the Shadow Mountain High School gymnasium dedicated as the Jerry Conner Gymnasium.
Conner played one year of baseball at Arizona State University before transferring across town to play both baseball and basketball at Grand Canyon University, where he was a teammate of legendary Mississippi State baseball coach Ron Polk. Conner received his Bachelor of Science degree from Grand Canyon University and his Masters and Reading Specialist degrees from Arizona State University.
Conner’s teams have been highly acclaimed, gaining considerable popularity and notoriety because of their relentless, up-tempo brand of wide-open, run-and-gun basketball. The 1995-96 State Champion Shadow Mountain team, featuring Atlanta Hawks star Mike Bibby, averaged 96 points per game, scored over 100 points in 13 contests, set a state single-game scoring record of 134 points, was the highest scoring team in Arizona prep history, and finished the season rated as the 12th best high school team in the nation.
