GOLF: BMC in 5th at Natural State Classic

HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. -- Blue Mountain College slogged its way to fifth place among 15 teams during Monday's rain-plagued opening round of the Natural State Spring Classic.

BMC posted a 306 in a steady downpour and trails leader Rogers State University of Tulsa, Okla., by 18 shots in the tournament comprised of 10 NCAA Division II teams and five NAIA teams.

Michael Collie led Blue Mountain with a four-over-par 75 over the hilly, 6,536-yard, par-71 Red Apple Inn course. Adam Hall, Brandon Robbins and Daniel Singh each had a 77 while Grant Burns struggled to an 86.

Michael Newton of Rogers State and Rowdy Garrett of Arkansas Tech shared the first-round lead with a one-under-par 70, and Landon Morgan of Rogers State posted a 72.

Rogers State holds a 13-shot lead over Arkansas State after posting a three-over-par 287. Delta State University is in third with a 303 and host Harding University is in fourth at 306.
