For over 50 years, Johnnie Armstrong has been an influence on the campus of Blue Mountain and in the world of women's athletics.  She has served as director of the physical education department, expanded its curriculum and served as director of athletics.  Under her guidance, the institution began intercollegiate basketball in 1972 and added tennis in 1986.  Armstrong was involved in the beginnings of intercollegiate sports for women in Mississippi and served on the resolutions committee for the AIAW in 1970.
